[Straits Times] Many benefits to Woodlands transborder hub

MR BENJAMIN Tan Swan Chee's suggestion merits serious evaluation ("Build transborder transport hub in Woodlands"; Forum Online, April 16).
It is a very good alternative to current proposals.
Under Mr Tan's suggestion, existing KTM rail infrastructure will be upgraded for high-speed train services, compared with the more costly construction of a new one.
Malaysia may continue to assume full ownership of this cross-border train network, while working with Singapore on the most efficient way of expanding links for transport, logistics and tourism.
The plan could be a good reason to transform the Causeway into a world-renowned Friendship Bridge, as proposed by the Johor Sultan ("Critics of Forest City are jealous: Johor Sultan"; March 23).
This, in turn, could be a catalyst to develop the Johor Strait more sensibly and sustainably, for the resource security of Malaysia and Singapore, as well as for top attractions, instead of being polluted with many trite projects.
A thoughtful and sensitive development plan can raise the living standards of residents on both sides of the waterway - including the values of their properties - in a way that no single vanity structure can.
